The History of Global Warming

Global warming is an issue that has caught the attention and occupied the research time of a number of scientists and topography experts. The fear that our planet earth will soon become a very hot place unfit to support habitat is alarming in itself. What is global warming and who found this or suggested about the global warming scare for the first time? How did the scare evolve for so many subsequent years? Finding the answers to these questions is in itself an interesting process.

Global warming is a phenomenon which has been identified by the following changes.

a. The earth?s temperature has increased by about 5 degrees. b. Glaciers have melted and retreated at an alarming rate c. There is a lot of change occurring in the earth?s eco system

If one were to trace the history of the global warming scare, it would be surprising to know that the above symptoms have been present for the past 18000 years. Before 18000 years the Earth was a very cold place to live in. The upper latitudes of almost all continents on earth were submerged in sheets of ice. Only then the earth warming started bringing to a slow change in the 1 lakh years of ice age. Back then the deserts were quite extensive, summers were short and winters were quite cruel.

The effects of global warming were first discovered scientifically in the year 1896 by Svante Arrhenius, a Swedish scientist. He discovered that combustion of fossil fuel may result in significant increase in global temperatures. He established a link between the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and the temperature. According to him, the earth?s average temperature stands at about 15oC because of the infrared absorption capacity exhibited by water vapor and carbon dioxide. This is the natural greenhouse effect on planet earth.

Arrhenius stated that when the level of carbon dioxide increases two times the average surface temperature of earth also increases by about 5oC. Along with another scientist, Thomas Chamberlain, Arrhenius found that human actions could cause increase in the atmosphere?s carbon dioxide level and thus also result in enhanced global temperatures.

After this discovery the fact was actually forgotten for many years. This was because human contributions to carbon emissions were considered to be insignificant and natural factors were seen as more effective. Also the perception was that natural actions such as ocean circulations would have a canceling effect on the emissions from human activities.

Towards the late ?50s and early ?60s, Charles Keeling discovered highly modern technologies to create and analyze concentration curves for carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere. To this date, these curves have been a major scale for evaluating the levels of global warming.

In the ?80s the global temperatures started rising removing fears of a possible repeat of the ice age. Only in the late 1980s when temperature increase was very much significant, more and more research work started and continues till today.
