Global Warming Mail Art Show To Benefit Women's Wisdom Project

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) September 18, 2007 -- The 2nd International Mail Art Show is on view at Asylum Gallery, 1719 25th St., Sacramento (25th & R Sts.), from September 8 to the 30. The theme of the exhibit is Global Warming: A Hot Time in the Old Town! A portion of sales proceeds will be donated to the Women's Wisdom Project, a nonprofit program of the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services. Gallery hours have changed to noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and Wednesdays to Fridays by appointment (916-804-6095) Asylum Gallery (http://www.asylumgallery.net)). All mail art pieces will be sold for $5 each.

Entries have been both emailed and mailed from artists in Australia, Europe, Canada, South America and all over the United States. They run the gamut from digital photos to mixed media pieces and even a Styrofoam head that was painted. This is the second time in four years that Asylum has sponsored an international mail art show.

Women's Wisdom Project is an art program for adult women who want to broaden their creative lives. Women's Wisdom is a free, drop-in program that includes art classes taught by professional artists. Women's Wisdom Project provides a free, hot lunch, a supportive staff, counseling, referrals and a unique opportunity for socialization. WWP accepts women from all backgrounds and walks of life.

The women use the healing power of art to recover and create stable, productive lives for themselves and their children. The women range in age from their 20's to their 70's, and the average age of a Wisdom artist is in her 40's. No art background is required to participate in the program. By using the creative process in a warm, supportive environment, WWP teaches women that they have the potential to shape their own lives. Expressing themselves in paintings, sketches, sculpture, writing and poetry rekindles their spirit and sense of self-worth. The goal of Women's Wisdom Project is to allow women to express themselves through art and regain the emotional strength to re-enter society, rejoin their families, go back to school or join the working world.

Asylum Gallery is a contemporary gallery of artists whose work and experience span a unique circumference. You will find vibrant artwork that ranges from classic black and white to abstract photography, mixed media painting and traditional printmaking to work in the digital realm. In addition to the exhibits, there are always prints by member artists, cards and hand-made jewelry on sale for very reasonable prices.

While being a membership gallery, Asylum also offers exhibition space to other artists in the community with its bi-annual International Mail Art shows (in which a portion of proceeds go to different charitable groups) and the Juried Holiday Print Shows in November and December.
